Text and Image
Jamie Reid
The work of Jamie
Reid is a good example of images that combine text. I think that Jamie Reid
creates his work to shock people, using political issues within his work that
could offend if seen by the right person. In one of his images he used a
criminal, Myra Hindley. Across the mug shot there are college works reading
‘GOD SAVE MYRA HINDLEY’. This relates to another one of Reid image in which he
defaced an image of the Queen reading ‘GOD SAVE THE QUEEN’. Some people would
find this shocking as he has put a the queen in the same league as a child
murder. This image strongly relates to punk as it follows the look and style of
Jamie Reid’s se pistols album cover. I
really like this image because of the kind of typography used. For this image
he has used a type of cut and paste font, where the letters or words of a
magazine has been cut out a stook over the top of the image. I think that this
is very fitting for the image he has created because it an image of a murder,
which is all rather rough edged and nor very clean cut. The text is very bold and stands out. I think
that this image as a whole communicates that the roughness of Myra Handley and
her crimes.
Jim Goldberg
Jim goldberg is another example of an artist who uses text and image together but where are Jamie Reid uses them together to shock the veiwer, Jim goldberg uses it to get emotion through the viewer. the way that he combines text an image is he takes an image he then gets the subject in the image to write what they think about the image, the emotions they feeling or something about there life. i like the raw emotion that goes into he images. i think that the handwriting of the subject makes the image look very raw, especially in this image. this is an image of a women taking about how she had a bad life, which is really honest. as the message at the bottom of the images is hand written is shows how the hard ship of her life has taken a toll, as the hand writing is very messy and more like a scribble rather than actual writing. i think that the way Jim Golberg combins the two is very simple but at the same time also very effective. They way that he does this lets you see into people's lives and creates a sence of sympathy from the viewer to the subject.
